To celebrate the great Alex Ovechkin reaching the historic 900-goal milestone, the Washington Capitals were looking for a way to engage fans in the wake of this record-breaking moment. Knowing the best engagement comes from interaction, the Capitals wanted to create a virtual experience for fans nationwide to play, come together in celebration of this momentous achievement, and feel part of hockey history.
Using WIT’s platform to bring this experience to life, the Washington Capitals partnered with Venture Global to launch the GR8 Skate, a digital runner-style arcade game featuring Ovi’s most iconic sayings, brought to life using audio recordings of his own voice. Players were challenged to skate and jump through various levels of iconic DC and Capitals locations, collecting power-ups and avoiding obstacles like goaltenders and zambonis.
To drive awareness and boost engagement, the campaign was promoted throughout the Capitals social channels, media coverage, and the in-arena celebration at Capital One Arena. Fans could easily access the experience through digital promotions and QR code. Prizes ranged from signed pucks and photos to one lucky grand-prize winner receiving a signed Ovi jersey and four tickets to the Capitals vs. Hurricanes game.
